Match of the Round

Woongarrah 3 – 4 Umina

Following their 9-goal thriller earlier in the season, Woongarrah and Umina’s second meeting of the year lived up to all expectations in the match of the round as the E-Gals secured victory in the dying moments to claim all three points over the Wildcats once again.

With both teams tussling early in the contest to get the upper hand, it was the visitors that struck first after 20 minutes thanks to Aurelia Haynes who converted from the penalty spot for Umina.

With plenty of open play passages throughout the entire match, Woongarrah was able to quickly find an equaliser thanks to a goal from Tasmin Gribbin.

With the game poised to go either way leading up to the halftime whistle, Umina once again found the go-ahead goal through Hannah Batten who found herself one-on-one and was able to beat the opposition goalkeeper by getting her toe to the ball first and guiding it into the back of the net.

Starting the second period down 2-1, the home side Woongarrah rallied together as they started to control the game and have the better of the chances.

Woongarrah’s persistence paid off as Zoe Wheeler was able to score her first goal of the year to once again level the score.

The game opened up as both teams pushed for a winner. Hannah Batten was able to secure her brace and give her side the lead for the third time in the fixture as her goal took the contest to 3-2.

However, Umina failed to hold onto their lead once again as prolific goal scorer Kelly Hogan found a third equaliser for Woongarrah with just 12 minutes left to play.

Woongarrah were forced to make a late reshuffle after a ball to the back of the head resulted in their centre-back having to be taken from the field.

With just moments left on the referee’s clock, Amanda Dingle silenced the home crowd as she grabbed a late winner to deny Woongarrah a point and propel her side back into third place as Umina snatched the victory.

“We have had to dig deep the past two games as we have struggled with injuries and had just the bare eleven players available for both games,” voiced Michael Penn when reflecting on the win.

“We continued to allow Woongarrah back into the game every time we went ahead. I felt we had the majority of the game but if we can’t turn possession into goals we’re always going to make it hard on ourselves.”

Penn added, “Having no out-and-out strikers available has cost us. Our two strikers have been injured for the past for the past two games. Thankfully Kate Styles will be back for the East Gosford game. The players have done well to score seven goals in two games without a proven striker.”
