PlayFootball Coaching Resources
Coaches can influence a participant’s enjoyment of the game more than anyone else. They teach the skills, foster passion and lead like-minded lovers of football. Whether taking on a local team or kicking-off a career, you can help shape the next generation. Australia’s coaching pathway gives you the opportunity to maximise your potential.
Included below are a vast array of training guides developed by the FFA aimed to improve the quality of coaching that players receive, from the ALDI Miniroos stage right through to the Seniors Performance Phase of player development!
ALDI MiniRoos (Ages 5-9)
Within the ALDI MiniRoos program, emphasis is placed on natural development, or learning by PLAYING football. Fun football exercises rather than coaching are key to helping players build a love for the game.
The downloadable guide below also exposes coaches to the basic rules of the game whilst also providing tips and hints on building a football culture in a completely practical setting.
The ALDI MiniRoos Downloadable Activity Guide can be found HERE

Skill Acquisition Phase (Ages 9-13)
Within the Skill Acquisition Phase, the coach must focus on building a solid foundation of technical skill within players. The downloadable guide focusses on the development of footballs ‘Four Functional Game Skills’. These are:
- First Touch
- Striking the Ball
- Running with the Ball
- 1v1 Situations
These four Core Skills make up 95% of the actions of any outfield player during a game of football which is why it is critical to train these actions repeatedly so that the players have the opportunity to develop their ability to perform them more effectively during a game.

Game Training Phase (Ages 13-17)
In the Game Training Phase the coach’s aim will be the development of tactical awareness, perception and decision making through a game related approach to training.
The Downloadable Guide below provides the coach with training sessions designed to help the players apply the Functional Game Skills in a team setting using the FFA endorsed ‘1-4-3-3’ formation.

Performance Phase (Ages17+)
In this Phase the coach prepares the team for a competition environment where winning becomes the main aim. Training focuses on solving football problems, based on match analysis. FOOTBALL CONDITIONING also becomes a key component at this stage in a players football development.
