Umina 6 – 0 Southern & Ettalong

A significant volume of rain swept the Coast this past Sunday as all but one of our Premier League fixtures went ahead as the drainage on Umina Oval withstood the weather as these two peninsular teams faced off for the third and final time this season.

The hosts started the contest on the front foot and quickly found themselves two against one, running at the opposition’s goal. Chelsea Campbell played a sharp one-two to Hannah Batten as Chelsea finished off in the bottom right corner for the first goal of the day.

Following their opening goal, Umina quickly doubled the lead after the E-Gals got bodies in the box after a quick break which led to Hayley Fulwood pouncing on a loose ball to finish well and put her side up 2-0.

The high defensive line of the visitors saw Umina struggle to play onside passes when trying to further expose the Southern backline.

This led to Kate Styles deciding to take matters upon herself and run from the midfield while Southern waited for her to pass as Kate broke the line and clinically finished one-on-one with ease.

A well-placed long diagonal ball from Kirby Squires found Chelsea Campbell one-on-one with the Southern keeper once again as Chelsea scored her second of the day and extended Umina’s lead to 4-0.

Provider Kirby Squires then got a goal herself after a loose ball off a corner fell to Squires who recorded just her third goal of 2023.

The last goal of the game came from Hayley Fulwood who picked up the ball just outside the box and dribbled past four defenders to score her second goal of the day as the defending champs recorded a 6-0 win and their eighth win of the season.

“Despite the score and their low possession, Southern played to their strengths and played an aggressive high line which caught us offside many of times or ran us down and cleared the ball with their extremely quick centre back.” praised Umina’s coach Steve Donaldson.

Steve also had very high praise for his experienced attacker, “Kate Styles was instrumental in beating the offside trap though, by picking the ball up deep in midfield. On to Kanwal.”
