Match of the Round

Kanwal 5 – 0 Killarney

Sunday’s match of the round game between Kanwal and Killarney went fairly to script for the Bulls as Kanwal dominated from the outset.

The match was barely one minute old when Hayls Ballard fizzed a shot millimetres wide of the post to set the tone for the match.

Killarney was full of effort and desire but lacked that clinical touch to apply pressure to a Kanwal side that defended well.

Kanwal took a much-deserved lead when Grace Heinemann scored after being put through by veteran Hayls Ballard.

Current WPL Golden Boot leader Jordan Evans doubled the lead when she rounded the keeper and slotted home for the Bulls.

The second half saw Kanwal completely dominate the match. Killarney tried hard but couldn’t match Kanwal as they played the ball around the midfield with ease.

Kanwal scored a third after some enterprising play down the left with Molly Couch, Jade Graham and Hayls Ballard setting up Maddi Dunlop to squeeze the ball home.

The fourth goal, scored by Hayley Green involved 5-6 players and some crisp ball movement that was a joy to watch.

The fifth and final goal was also a great team goal, scored expertly by Skye Parkes.

“The final result and a fair indication of the match,” spoke Kanwal’s Ben Raychaudhuri. “Really pleased with my girls today. Some of those goals were awesome to watch as we finished off some enterprising team play starting from the back.”

“Killarney had quite a few injuries to key players and again lost their keeper at halftime, so their effort was commendable,” added Ben.

Killarney’s Adam Tait also spoke after the match. “Congratulations to Kanwal for the way they played. We have a young side that is trying, and we will keep trying.”

Kincumber 0 – 6 East Gosford

Looking to jump Terrigal and claim their spot on top of the WPL ladder with a win away from home, the Rams showed why they are undefeated in 2023, putting together another dominant performance against the Roos this past weekend.

Kincumber started the game with confidence after achieving a late winner in their Reserve Grade fixture beforehand.

The last time these two sides met, Tahlor Thackray was firing on all cylinders and looked to get a similar result in this game as she continued to attack Kincumber’s goal all first half, having three clear chances to score only to be denied by good goalkeeping or wayward shots going just wide of the post.

After a change in formation at half time, East Gosford entered the second period with a much more attacking set up which paid dividends inside the first five minutes of the second half as Madelene Yates was able to score her side’s second goal.

A few minutes later, goal scorer Maddy then turned provider as she was able to play a tremendous through ball to Tahlor Thackray who recorded her second goal of the game as the score extended to 3-0.

As East Gosford continued to push for more goals, they were awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box as Tahlor Thackray stepped up for the Rams and precisely found the back of the net to record her hattrick for the day.

Kayla Vanderfield also recorded two goals to her name as the score finished 6-0 in favour of the visitors.

“Full Credit to Kincumber, they came out with a few players out injured and managed to get a result in Reserve Grade and push first grade in the first half. I’m a huge supporter of what Kincumber are doing in the Women’s Premier League and women’s football on the Central Coast,” announced Jorge Chavez.

“I can’t wait to see these young girls develop in the next couple of years and become even greater footballs. Full credit to the coach, the staff, and the committee at Kincumber.”

Southern & Ettalong 1 – 5 Umina

Last year’s WPL Grand Finalists met again for the second time this season this past Sunday for another instalment of the peninsular derby.

It was another fast start from the reigning champs who took the lead after just 10 minutes after a great through ball by Riley Lewin found Kate Styles free who then squared the ball to E-Gals captain Chelsea Campbell who chipped the keeper to open the scoring.

Umina then doubled their lead after a pass from Hannah Batten found Kate Styles who took one touch around the keeper and finished in an empty net for her first of the day.

Umina further extended their lead before halftime as Hannah Batten found herself on the end of a shot unmarked at the back post to tap in and give her side a 3-0 lead at the break.

Umina resumed where they left off in the second period and got their fourth goal from a wonderfully worked team goal played out from a goal kick.

Bella DeMeyer found herself free in the middle who initiated the attack as Kate Styles finished off a one-on-one for her second of the day and fifth of the season.

Southern got one back thanks to a great knuckleball from Elaine McConaghey that left the Umina keeper with zero chance after the ball changed directions multiple times whilst in the air.

Looking to bounce back straight away, a quick free kick by Kirby Squires released Hayley Fulwood one-on-one as she made no mistake and found the back of the net to round up Umina’s 5-1 win over Southern.

“Knew not to take SEU lightly with the conditions they are used to,” spoke E-Gals coach Steve Donaldson.

“Small bumpy field with a cricket pitch in the middle isn’t ideal for our game. The wind didn’t help either, but we actually played some decent football considering. Was a good honest game from SEU. Felt we were just too quick and clinical throughout the game though.”

“SEU still look like they’re finding their feet but gave us more trouble this time around which was good. Hoping their player who went down with a head knock isn’t too injured either, she’s a top player for them,” added Steve.
