Killarney v Wyoming

Match of the round will see a rejuvenated Killarney, coming off their initial win of 2025, welcome a hungry Wyoming desperate to get back in the winner’s column when these two teams clash Saturday night at Edsacc Oval.

Both sides enter the Round 6 headline fixture with just one win to show after the opening five fixtures.

Newly promoted Wyoming got their season off to a perfect start, defeating their counterparts Ourimbah on opening day but since then Wyoming have only been able to pick up one more point in a draw against Avoca.

However, opening day for Killarney was one to forget as Chris Ackerley’s men let a 2-0 lead slip in the final ten minutes to concede a 3-2 defeat against top-of-the-table Southern & Ettalong.

More misery followed for the Terriers who let another lead slip the following week against Ourimbah. Week three saw more positives for Killarney, but Ackerley’s men still feel short in another 3-2 loss, this time against the in-form Kanwal.

Nonetheless, Killarney were able to right their wrongs last weekend, coming from behind to defeat the defending League Champions Woongarrah 3-2, holding off a late comeback scare from the Wildcats to secure all three points.

Ackerley voiced what that victory meant for him and his players, “It was great to get the result, especially since we have been so close to getting the points against Southern and Kanwal.”

“It was especially pleasing to not give away anything in the last ten minutes which we have in all three previous games.”

Despite a slow start to the season, Ackerley is adamant that morale within the squad is still high. “We know that with a bit of luck and game management, we could have got points out of all the games we have played.”

“The belief has never faulted in what we are trying to achieve, the start we have had is somewhat mirroring last seasons.”

Now with their focus turned on Wyoming and securing back-to-back defeats, a win for either side will see them climb into the top half of the table as six teams are currently only sitting on 3 or 4 points at this stage of the season.

Killarney have shown that once again they can match it with the best this competition has to offer, but the consistency has not been there for this side which has led to valuable points slipping in crucial moments.

Ackerley is well aware of the threats their opponents this weekend possess but is looking forward to the challenge as well as playing in front of a lively home crowd Saturday night.

“Wyoming will be a tough game as they have a very young squad who seem to be working extremely hard for one another as their start to the season shows.”

“For us to be successful on Saturday we will have to show the same desire and work rate that we did last week and be clinical in any chances we create.”

“We also need to be aware of their set pieces and their long throws which seem to cause havoc in the games that I have seen, hopefully, we will get a good crowd at Edsacc for our first Saturday night game of the year at home.”

After a dream start in their return season back in the MPL competition where Scott Snodgrass’s men were undefeated after two fixtures with four points to their name, results have since not gone their way as the Tigers look to snap a three-game losing streak.

“It’s been a mixed start to the season,” voiced Snodgrass. “With games gone begging particularly against Avoca and Terrigal. We just haven’t been able to covert those half chances that the top sides do.”

“Equally we have been gifting very soft goals at times and that is something that we need to improve. We also can’t continue to play in patches and must remain disciplined in our setup if we are to be successful this season.”

Wyoming are coming off a devastating loss to Southern. Wyoming entered round 5 with just six goals against, however, Southern doubled that total in ninety minutes as the Tigers fell 6-1 to the Lions last Saturday night.

Despite this heavy defeat, confidence within this young playing group is still high claimed Snodgrass. “Morale has been solid amongst the group. It’s a young side with an average age of 23 and whilst we have had some mixed results they continue to train well with enthusiasm.”

Snodgrass also talked about what he is anticipating from the opposition. “After a frustrating start to the season but a solid win against last year’s league champions will have provided Killarney with a lot of confidence. They are winners and have that mentality and that is something I want my lads to develop, but it may take time with such a young group.”

“The Terriers have been the benchmark for the last decade, and we must be at our best this weekend. We can’t play like we did last week and expect to win and have tweaked our setup this weekend to counter that.”

“To get the victory on Saturday will take a few things, but primarily we need to be patient and disciplined in our defensive setup, equally our attack needs to be sharper.”

“We are full strength bar the return of Patty Mills over the next week or so, so there are no excuses. I just hope for a decent pitch that allows both sides to play football.”
