Kincumber v Woongarrah

Feeling the highs of their inaugural win of the season, Woongarrah will look to make it two in a row when they travel to Frost Reserve and take on finals prospects the Kincumber Roos.

John Jiggins and his squad will be raring to get back on the pitch following last weekend’s bye. Kincumber have not played since the 16th of July as it will almost be a month in between games for the Roos who look to bounce back into the winner’s column.

In their last fixture, the Roos made the trip to Edsacc Oval and came out second best against the Terriers in a 3-1 defeat to mark their fourth loss of the season.

Despite entering the weekend sitting in second last on the ladder, Kincumber will be adamant to pick up the three points in front of a home crowd and close the distance on the top four.

Kincumber are only five points away from a finals spot and with plenty of games left to play, the Roos still have plenty to play for but will need to beat Woongarrah this weekend which they failed to do so in their inaugural meeting.

Round 7 saw Kincumber travel to Hamlyn Terrace to face Woongarrah on enemy territory and after a close battle for ninety minutes, nothing could separate the two sides who were forced to split the points in a 1-1 draw.

Kincumber will now enjoy having a home advantage as they prepare for their second meeting with the Wildcats.

Kincumber will be hoping to exploit their leading goal scorer this season Charlotte Heath who has netted an outstanding six goals for her side so far.

The youngster has made her mark against multiple teams this season as the agile attacker looks dangerous whenever she gets the ball at her feet and will play a major part in Kincumber’s success on Sunday and the remainder of the season.

After weeks and weeks of coming up just short in the search for their first win, Woongarrah finally secured all three points in their last game as they were able to successfully defeat Killarney 2-0 at home.

It’s looked to be another tough day at the office for the Wildcats who only had the bare 11 players available last weekend. Nonetheless, Kaine Harmsworth’s squad dug deep with an extremely gusty performance which they look to further build on this weekend.

“Our first win last week as a squad was a great achievement and also a relief after being so close on so many occasions this season. Not only that, but it was also nine of the girl’s first win in WPL after debuting this season.”

Despite recruiting some top-tier players in the off-season, most notably Kelly Hogan the 2023 WPL Golden Boot winner, Woongarrah has an extremely young squad that lacks the WPL experience most of their competitors have.

Woongarrah have also struggled immensely with injuries as Harmsworth talks more in-depth about their struggles this season. “We have been hit hard with injuries in the middle of the season with only 11 girls available over the last few weeks with some girls hopefully returning over the next few weeks.”

Despite things not going their way at times this season, Woongarrah has shown tremendous character at all times, never giving up even when their back is against the wall and are down on the scoreline.

Woongarrah will be up for the fight once again as they look to close the distance on Kincumber on the ladder as we come into the business end of the year, but Harmsworth knows that is easier said than done as he has high admiration of the way the opposition plays.

“Kincumber plays a good attacking style of football,” stated Harmsworth. “With great pace up front pouncing on any loose balls at the back and a well-organised backline which is hard to breakdown.”

“To come away with the points on Sunday we will need to be on our toes on Kincumber’s attacking raids and control the midfield and play our football we know works for us and take our chances in front of goal when our opportunities come.”
