Kincumber 2 – 2 Umina

The round 8 Match of the Round saw the Kincumber Roos welcome Umina’s WPL to Frost Reserve on Sunday ready for a tough game off the back of a 3-2 loss against Umina less than two weeks ago at Pluim Park.

Kincumber started the game strong, passing well across the park and creating chances on goal.

This strong start led to a goal for Kincumber in the opening 15 minutes, combination passing from Nina Boije Af Gennas and Lauren Tindale in midfield put Charlotte Heath into space in front of the goal where she calmly shot to the side of the Umina keeper.

Following the opening goal Umina started to build, putting together periods of strong attacking passages and building momentum.

A Kincumber handball in the box gifted Umina a penalty and a great opportunity to equalise which they were unable to capitalise on, missing to the left of the goal.

Kincumber were doing well to hold them off, however, two separate substitutions saw Kincumber’s centre back and right back leave the field.

Roos’ coach John Jiggins had to reshuffle his players, with midfielders dropping into the vacant spots. Umina continued to push, and their perseverance was rewarded as a goalmouth scramble led to Kya Byrnes equalising for Umina minutes before halftime.

Returning for the second half at 1-1, the contest was very tight with both teams putting together strong attacking raids.

Around 20 minutes into the second half Kincumber were awarded a free kick close to halfway in Umina’s half.

Airley Arnold took the opportunity to shoot for goal and cracked a powerful shot towards the Umina goal. The shot sailed over the keeper’s head and Airley’s efforts saw Kincumber lead again 2-1.

Umina returned strong following the second goal and were determined to return serve. A late injury to Kincumber’s centre-back resulted in the Kincumber side playing with 10 players for the last 10 minutes as all substitution windows had been used.

Despite their best efforts, Kincumber were unable to hold Umina out and a breakaway through ball allowed Kate Styles to go one-on-one with Kincumber’s goalkeeper which led to the final goal of the afternoon.

The game finished 2-2 with each team now looking forward to when they will meet again for the final time before the end of the season.

Woongarrah 0 – 2 Terrigal

Sunday afternoon’s match between Woongarrah and Terrigal unfolded as another positive chapter for league leaders Terrigal, who clinched a comfortable victory over their hosts securing another clean sheet despite Woongarrah’s home ground advantage.

From the opening whistle, Terrigal showcased their trademark composure, swiftly establishing their rhythm. However, Woongarrah showed early resilience, refusing to yield easily and pressing high to disrupt Terrigal’s attacks.

Terrigal’s cohesive play down both flanks bore fruit early on, as Lily Brooks’ precision corner found Rachel Darby at the far post.

Darby’s deft header set up Kate Moss perfectly, who clinically nodded the ball into the net, breaking the deadlock in just the 8th minute.

The remainder of the first half saw Terrigal dictating play, patiently building their attacks while Woongarrah’s defence valiantly repelled each onslaught.

Shortly before the break, Terrigal showcased their attacking prowess once more. A fluid team move originating from their defensive line culminated in Kaitlyn Knight’s composed finish from outside the box, extending Terrigal’s lead to 2-0.

As the second half progressed, Terrigal remained committed to their strategy of measured possession football.

Despite a fleeting opportunity for Woongarrah, when Terrigal’s goalkeeper Abbey Omayao momentarily misplaced a pass, Omayao quickly redeemed herself with a resilient save, preserving Terrigal’s clean sheet.

Throughout the half, Woongarrah’s defence, spearheaded by the steadfast Janelle Oliveira, staunchly resisted Terrigal’s relentless pressure.

Despite their defensive resilience, Woongarrah found themselves largely confined to their own half as Terrigal continued to dominate possession and territory.

As the final minutes played out, Terrigal showed no mercy in their raids of attack, Woongarrah happily winding down the clock at every opportunity, seemingly happy to accept their fate of the 2-0 deficit.

An extremely pleased Gab Blanch spoke post-match. “I am really happy with how the girls played today. We were patient, we absolutely dominated possession, and we yet again created so many opportunities on goal.”

“The creativity and persistence of this group of players is impressive. We were unfortunate to lose Emma Taylor early on in the game, to what looks to be a significant injury, but we bounced back and kept our eyes on the prize.”

Blanch also added, “Really happy with how we are tracking and looking forward to getting back into training this week to refine some key areas.”

Despite the defeat, Kaine Harmsworth showed his appreciation to his squad for continuing to show signs of improvement and fighting until the final whistle.

“It was great to see the fight and determination of the girls to continue to push each other and grow as a team having 8 of our 11 players under 18, to see them absorb the amount of pressure that Terrigal through at us will only continue to do us well.”

“To have a 2-0 result is continuing to show that with the third time this season playing Terrigal. The girls are learning and accepting the challenge that we put to them at the start of this year as a learning period for us.”

Kanwal 3 – 4 Killarney

A seven-goal thriller saw Killarney secure their second victory of the season, recording a second win over the Bulls as the Terriers remain just two points away from the top four.

It took Killarney just 9 minutes to find the opening goal of the evening, Tori Robertson was able to record her inaugural goal of 2024 thanks to a Laura Knight assist to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Aliesha Radford doubled the lead just 10 minutes later. A perfectly placed Kirsten Barrett corner found Radford in an extremely dangerous area as she connected well with her strike which hit the crossbar and made its way into the Kanwal goal.

However, Killarney’s two-goal lead would only last minutes as Tasharn Smith was able to pull one back for the Bulls.

With both teams searching for the next important goal of the fixture, Killarney’s Kirsten Loveridge found herself with some space and time 30 meters out. Loveridge thought why not before hitting an absolute rocket past the Kanwal keeper to reinstate Killarney’s 2-goal lead.

Kanwal entered the second half with a renewed energy knowing how critical it was for them to be next on the scoresheet if they wanted to salvage anything from the contest.

Just 10 minutes into the second half, Kanwal found their second goal through Joanne Mitchell to reduce the deficit back to 1 goal.

The game was in the balance for the next twenty minutes as both teams created chances and enjoyed opportunities on goal.

Barrett, who already has scored a screamer, stepped up to take a free kick in a promising area for her side on the 74-minute mark.

Barrett was once again able to find the back of the net with her effort on goal, recording her second of the day and giving Killarney a 4-2 lead.

Down but not out, Kanwal kept knocking on the door of the Killarney defence and were rewarded in the 82nd minute when they were able to score a free kick of their own thanks to Hayley Green.

However, Killarney were able to see out the victory on enemy territory as a satisfied Jai Menser now focuses on some rest for his squad after an extremely heavy schedule the past two weeks.

“I think all the WPL and DIV1 Girls deserve a big rest from the last two weeks, an awesome contest for the entire match between both squads. My girls did themselves very proud with their efforts for the entire ninety.”
