Avoca 2 – 3 Woy Woy

Avoca and Woy Woy were the only Scribal Premier League fixture that was played this past weekend as Paul Oval evaded the wet weather and hosted a five-goal thriller which saw Woy Woy come from behind to claim the three points.

The visitors Woy Woy entered Sunday keenly aware they were taking on a team that had an extremely strong showing in round 1 and knew that getting any result from the fixture was going to be a challenging task.

Avoca started strongly, sending players through the lines, and creating one-on-one situations on multiple occasions, and were only thwarted by a scrambling Woy Woy defence.

After 10 minutes, Woy Woy found their footing in the match, looking to cut off a quality Avoca team at their creative source.

A well-worked play down the right saw Harvey Shannon Silvester get in behind the Avoca defence turning back infield to provide Jayden Howell with the opportunity to take the touch and sweep the ball from outside the 18-yard box into the far post.

Avoca responded 7 minutes later with a free kick delivered with purpose into the area. The Woy Woy goalkeeper, Jack Arigho provided the save with the ball hitting Woy Woy defender Ty Daniel who turned the ball into his own net for an own goal, levelling the score at 1-1.

The scoreline deservedly stayed locked at 1-1 up until halftime, after the break things took a turn for Avoca as Ryan Martz was shown a red card for the Sharks.

Avoca adjusted and pushed for the goal to get them in front. Jago Stackhouse picked up the loose ball and drove into the box, releasing a shot that hit the post. The rebound was pounced on by his teammate Cooper Ebrington who converted for the goal and gave Avoca a 2-1 lead.

2-1 up and still wanting more, Avoca failed to capitalise on a number of goal scoring opportunities to put the game out of reach, Stu Adams even hitting the crossbar, with claims the ball had crossed the line but no goal awarded.

Avoca would come to rue this missed chances when Woy Woy received a dubious penalty, however James Tyne in goals for Avoca stepped up to save it down low to his right-hand side.

Looking to find an equaliser, Woy Woy applied more pressure to Avoca and responded with an expertly delivered cross into the box from Sebastian Alamos to Ty Daniel for the tap-in to take the game back level.

With Avoca down a man, they continued to gallantly fight for the win on the counter. Woy Woy with victory within their grasp continued to press and look for the breakthrough, which came after another dubious call in the box was deemed a handball and awarded a penalty by the official.

Ty Daniel stepped up for his side, coolly sending the opposition keeper the wrong way and giving Woy Woy the lead for the second time in the match.

The remaining minutes of the match became a tussle with Woy Woy claiming the spoils and securing their first win of the 2024 season.

“Overall, it is clear to see that when Avoca have all of their engines firing, they have a quality roster and a formidable team. I wish them luck for the remainder of the season,” voiced Woy Woy’s Shaun Macey.
