MATCH OF THE ROUND

Southern Ettalong 3 – 0 Terrigal

A dominant Southern Ettalong executed a perfect game plan to hand Terrigal just their third loss of the season as the Lionesses take a big step in securing a finals spot.

The contest between Southern and Terrigal started very fast and extremely back and forth as both teams applied pressure on one another and were awarded corners on both ends of the pitch. One of these corners saw Southern take the lead as Emily Trengrove scored her first goal of the season to give the Lionesess an important advantage on the scoreline. Despite going a goal down, Terrigal fought hard in attempt to level the score and the remainder of the first half continued to be an arm wrestle of a contest.

With sheer determination to play finals football in their minds, Southern entered the second half on fire and soon doubled their lead through Alana Currie. Southern dominated possession in the last 45- minutes and looked like the more dangerous team as they looked to further extend on their lead. It was none other than Emily Diaz who did what she does best and finished the game for her side with the third and final goal of the day.

Assistant coach Peter Blair commended the opposition who were simply better on the day as Blair states his squad will modify things and come back stronger. “Credit must go to the coaching staff and players of Southern Ettalong, they completely outplayed us. Our ladies never stopped trying throughout the contest, but we were not able to complete the chances we created where Southern was able to convert there’s into points. We will take the week to refocus our efforts and get back on track for the run into the semis.”

“The half-time chat was one simple sentence, if we want to make finals football, losing today is not an option,” stated Southern coach Marcus Warwick. “As a coach, I was proud obviously of offence and the goals scored but it was our defence that was the champions. I’m not sure Terrigal has been held scoreless this season, but my girls really worked hard and did exactly what was needed to keep Candice and Terrigal’s formidable attack at bay. We now move onto next week against Ourimbah and focus on what they will bring and how to assure a six-point Sunday,” added a proud Warwick.

Kanwal 12 – 1 Wyong

Kanwal claim their fifth and biggest win of the season after the Bulls record a 12-goal haul over Wyong this past weekend.

It was always going to be a hard day as Wyong entered the fixture with only 14 available for first grade with the majority of them having to play the full 90 minutes beforehand in reserve grade as the Emu’s continue to struggle with squad numbers. However, it was a very clinical display from Kanwal who found themselves up 6-1 at halftime. Wyong’s only goal of the day came just moments before the halftime break when they were awarded a penalty. Jessica Peachey stepped up for her side and calmly converted to grab her fifth goal of the season.

Wyong’s tired legs really started to show the more the encounter played out in the second half as Kanwal was able to put another six goals past the tired Wyong outfit. There were many outstanding displays from the Bulls today as Megan Green recorded four goals to her name. Jennifer Reeves was able to secure a hat trick to her name while Lucy Pratt (2), Hayley Green (2) and 16-year-old Hayley Starkey (1) also found themselves with goals to their names.

James Chauncy not only credited the opposition but also commended his players on another terrific effort under tough circumstances. “Full credit to Kanwal, they are a really good side, and we knew we were going to be in for a tough game today. Also, credit to my girls having to play 180 minutes again this weekend but showing the never give up attitude that they have and still fought for every ball right until the final whistle.”

“It was a clinical display from Kanwal against a spirited Wyong outfit. Their never say die attitude is to be admired, they fight until the end,” stated Bulls coach Allan Bourke.

Killarney 1 – 3 Umina

League leaders Umina go five points clear at the top of the table after securing their eleventh win of the season, defeating a courageous Killarney outfit.

Killarney started the fixture a bit flat as the opposition Umina created some chances from the start thanks to some good attacking players. Killarney slowly started to build themselves into the match and with a quick transition, the Terriers made a break and got one-on-one but couldn’t capitalise past the Umina keeper. The E-Gals started to enjoy a lot more possession in the enemy half around the 20-minute mark. Nice link-up play on the edge of the box by Hayley Fulwood and Gemma Crowson eventually led to a through ball into Chelsea Campbell who put it past the keeper into the bottom left corner to give her side the lead. Killarney responded well and replied around 7-minutes later after some great teamwork was finished off by Jessie Andrews who levelled the score at 1-1. This time it was Umina who responded well after conceding and pounced on a Killarney mistake as Kate Styles was able to drop in to find some space and then play a ball through to Chelsea who was able to restore her sides lead and grab her second of the day. The E-Gals entered the halftime break up 2-1.

With plenty to play for in the second half, both teams created chances but neither side could find that very important next goal. This was until Chelsea Campbell was able to drive herself into the enemy box and as a result was fouled which resulted in her team receiving a penalty. Up stepped Kate Styles who made no mess of the chance to secure the win for her side who remain on top of the ladder.

“Missed opportunities for Killarney today,” stated Killarney head coach Adam Tait.

Steve Donaldson admitted the opposition was a handful this past Sunday who gave them a real stern test. “Killarney Proved a great test for us as they really troubled us. On a windy day, they were able to make the most of their huge throw-ins up the sideline that got them into really good field territory that we truly had not much of an answer for. The main difference today was our midfielder, Leisel Collins. No matter what the conditions are, she is on another level in this competition when it comes to controlling the game with her effortless touch and passing, a true joy to watch.”

Ourimbah 2 – 4 Woy Woy

Woy Woy gets back on the scoresheet and back in the winner’s bracket this weekend after a fantastic comeback win to help keep their finals chances alive.

It was one of the better starts of Ourimbah’s season as they maintained consistent possession in the midfield and the opposition’s final third for the opening 20 minutes. Emma Hurley was on the receiving end of an accurate pass from her midfield and converted a one-on-one opportunity with a fantastic shot against the Woy Woy keeper. With about 10-minutes prior to halftime, Teagan Bell finished a well-placed shot into the left-hand side of the goal to double Ourimbah’s lead and send them into the sheds at halftime 2-0 up.

Ourimbah once again started the better of the two sides, but the tides changed when Woy Woy was able to get their first goal of the day after a fantastic free kick near the sideline from Maddie Yates found the back of the net. Minutes later Woy Woy was able to get back on level terms when Tahlor Thackray created some magic to score another great goal for the Roosters. Vanessa Quick was next on the scoresheet for her side after her shot made its way into the top left corner to give Woy Woy the lead for the first time in the fixture. Laura Mundy secured the 4-2 win after she punched a shot through the Ourimbah backline and after a fumble from the opposition keeper made its way into the goal for the final goal of the game.

“Disappointing to control the game for 60 to 65 minutes and lose 4-2,” spoke Dave Hurley post-match.
