Berkeley Vale 0 – 1 Killarney

An Adam Smith penalty was the only difference between these two sides as Killarney’s defence sought out another clean sheet to keep their unbeaten season alive.

After Mingara Oval’s surface was deemed unplayable due to the wet weather, this fixture would be rescheduled to give Terriers the home ground advantage as both clubs met at Edsaac Oval for this round 16 clash. Berkeley Vale remains the only team so far in the competition who are yet to play at their usual home ground in Mingara Oval. It was quite an even contest in the first half as both teams looked to gain the advantage but struggled immensely due to the conditions of the pitch. Berkeley Vale entered the match without their usual goalkeeper between the sticks and had to call up Dane Hole from one of their all-age teams who would make his first-grade debut. Corey Atkinson had the best opportunity in the opening 45-minutes but his attempt on goal could not beat the opposition goalie as the score remained locked at 0-0 after the opening period.

Berkeley Vale started the better side of the two in the second half as the Wombats enjoyed more possession but struggled to create chances as they were unable to break the backline of the best defence in the competition. In the 54th minute, Oscar Torres was deemed to have contacted the ball with his hand inside the box and after consulting his linesmen the official blew to the spot and awarded Killarney a contentious penalty. For the third time this season, Adam Smith stepped up for his side and successfully converted the penalty to put his side 1-0 up. Nathan Baxter had a great opportunity to double the Terrier’s lead moments later when a teammate squared the ball to him in the box, but Baxter was unable to convert the chance into a goal as he fired his shot straight at the goalie. Great goalkeeping from the debutant Hole prevented Killarney time and time again. In the end, Killarney saw out the Wombats to finish with another clean sheet and make it 12 wins from 12 games.

“The players of both teams tried their best to play football, but opportunities were few and far between.” Congratulations to Ackers and the Killarney Vale team on maintaining their unbeaten run” voiced Mark Pratt after the game.

Chris Ackerley was happy with his team picking up the result and keeping their fantastic undefeated streak going. “Pleased to keep another clean sheet and continue our winning run. Also pleased to have Adam Woodbine back from injury for the run-in to the end of the season.”

Terrigal 4 – 1 Woongarrah

With Duffy’s Oval again left unplayable due to the weather, Terrigal’s home advantage was switched to Hamlyn Terrace which didn’t seem to affect the O’lads who put together an extremely dominant performance against the Wildcats.

It only took two minutes for Terrigal to take the lead when a long throw into the box from full-back Ryan Pearce wasn’t dealt with by the opposition defence and Mark Partridge was the first to react and prod home to score. Looking for a quick reply, Woongarrah would create two great chances to level the score but were unable to find the back of the net which would come back to haunt them. It was another set piece that delivered the O’lads second goal with Tyson Cosgrove heading in powerfully at the far post to double his side’s lead which they would carry till halftime after a tremendous opening 45-minute display from Martyn Griffith’s side.

The second period was no different to the first with Terrigal dominating midfield control and it was Stuart Adams who broke through Woongarrah’s backline to square a ball to striker Mahkye Brownlie who emphatically finished to give Terrigal a 3-goal cushion. Tyson Cosgrove was able to claim his second of the day from a Ryan Pearce cross to seal the three points for the O’lads. Woongarrah were able to grab a consolation goal through substitute Cooper Olsen in the dying minutes of the game as the final score finished 4-1.

Luke Rogers was disappointed stating that was one of the worst performances he has seen from his side in years. “Martyn and his boys were by far the better team. They deserved the win and I’m sure they will feature in the finals come the end of the season. That was probably the worst performance I’ve seen from my boys in years. If we have any desire ourselves to play finals football, we are going to have to turn it around next week against Killarney.”

Martyn was ecstatic with the way his team bounced back from their disappointing result last weekend. “As a squad and individually we were not happy with our performance the previous week against Berkeley and the boys were eager to get back on the park and put that right, which they did. The three squads put in a display today and I was more pleased with the nine points. We must emulate those performances and work rate to the end of the season.”

Kanwal 10 – 2 Avoca

Kanwal bounces back to winning ways in an emphatic fashion, scoring 10 goals past Avoca in a 12-goal thriller.

It was a big day for Kanwal both on and off the field this past Sunday as the Bulls celebrated past players and club sponsors which brung a big crowd to Wadalba Sports Complex and the supporters weren’t disappointed with Kanwal putting on their best performance of the year. Avoca was the first to open the scoring when they took the lead through a well-taken goal from Oliver Chippendale within the opening 5 minutes. However, Kanwal would respond with three goals of their own inside the next 5-minutes of play. Firstly, James Scott would convert a Brad Porter freekick and then Scott would follow that up with his second moments later after another tidy finish. Bailey Appo then made it three with a clean finish across the keeper into the bottom corner. 3-1 and just over 10 minutes played but this was only the start of an amazing display from Kanwal. Joey Liddle was next on the scoresheet when his deflected shot made its way past the opposition goalkeeper. Bailey Appo would finish his first half off when he was able to finish 2 well-taken headers at the back post, both from corners to give his side a 6-1 lead. Avoca was awarded a penalty which Tyler Wade successfully converted to take the game to 6-2 at the break.

After a disappointing first half, Avoca improved in the second period, but Kanwal was too rampant for the Sharks. 10 minutes into the second half James Scott was able to secure his hattrick with a fantastic free-kick into the top right corner of the net giving the Avoca keeper zero chance. Brad Porter would also get on the scoresheet after latching onto a through ball from Joey Liddle. Ryan Walker would then make a few substitutions and it would pay off immediately when the two of them combined for the next 2 goals that allowed Kanwal to secure their 10 goals for the day. Brendan Hodges’s long throw would beat the Avoca goalie for Jason Cozens to head home in the 75th minute and the same two would combine with an almost identical goal in the 89th minute.

Neal Hide commented that he fails to remember a time his side put in a performance this subpar. “Avoca were as poor as I can ever remember, especially in the first half and conceded several awful goals, but all credit must go to Kanwal. They gave Avoca a football lesson on Sunday, they were very impressive.”

Ryan Walker was ecstatic after the game, not so much with the score, but the effort put in by his squad to not let their foot off the pedal and continue to play for the full ninety minutes. “They could have switched off after halftime with a 6-2 lead, but the boys place high standards on themselves and kept those standards up for the whole game.”
