MATCH OF THE ROUND

Terrigal 3 – 2 Southern & Ettalong

A late comeback attempt from Southern & Ettalong would not be enough for the Lionesses as Terrigal held on and secure the win in the Round 10 Match of the Round.

It was a brilliant start from Terrigal who out-enthused Southern in every way. Southern failed to stick to their game plan and was punished early on as Terrigal put three goals past them in the opening 45-minutes. Candice Phelan scored a brace for her side with her first, and the opening goal of the match coming at the 24-minute mark. Indiana Moyes doubled the O’lasses lead 12 minutes later before Candice Phelan grabbed her second of the day 5-minutes before the break. A defensive lapse from Terrigal saw Tatum Ansiewicz explode with her pace down the left hand and cut the ball across to Erin Heine who grabbed one back for Southern before halftime.

The second half saw Southern finally play to their abilities and they put pressure on the opposition defence which cause Terrigal to play more defensive which ultimately made Terrigal turn over the ball after the compounding pressure placed upon them. Emily Diaz was on hand to grab Southern’s second for the day after her rocket left foot found the back of the net which set up a tense battle to the finish. Southern continued to create chances but could not find the equaliser as the Terrigal defence scrambled well. Terrigal reverted back to their attacking structure, and we were able to alleviate the pressure and apply it back on Southern late in the second half. However, neither team could find the next goal as Terrigal held on to walk away 3-2 victors.

Despite a below-par first half, Marcus Warwick was ecstatic with how his side was able to turn things around and almost walk away with some points. “I’m very proud of the girl’s second half, we learned from the first half mistakes and now it’s on to Ourimbah. Congratulations to Terrigal for a great first half, and more importantly to hold on to their lead in the second, it was a brave performance.”

Gregory Parker commended the opposition as well as his squad who did well to overcome difficulties and find a way to hold on to their win. “The game against Southern was played in a great atmosphere of competitive football. The coaching staff and players gained experience on how to go about solving football problems that confronted us today. There is still a lot more potential to extract from the squad moving forward. Congratulations to Southern for a great performance. It is no wonder they defeated the ‘competition favourites’ in Umina, the week previous. I am very proud of the O’lasses for their performance today, despite missing team members. Such is the mental toughness and depth of our squad.”

Woy Woy 6 – 0 Ourimbah

A disappointing first half for Ourimbah saw the Falcons let five goals slip as Woy Woy bounce back to winning ways and remain on top of the table as league leaders.

Ourimbah commenced the game enjoying a decent amount of possession and maintained structure well, however they conceded a goal against the run of play when a scramble within the 6-yard box around the 15-minute mark was turned in by Woy Woy. It was a big disappointment for Dave Hurley and his side as this loss of momentum troubled their defensive structure, they would leak another four goals within the space of 2- minutes. Woy Woy entered the break at the halftime enjoying a 5-goal lead.

The halftime break was exactly what Ourimbah needed and with an attacking midfield change to start the second period, a rejuvenated Ourimbah side started to trouble the Woy Woy defensive line and goalkeeper on multiple occasions. Unfortunately for Ourimbah, they failed to convert any of these chances into goals as they remained scoreless once again. Ourimbah was unlucky to concede a goal from a set play in the final minutes of the game as they were unlucky not to keep a clean sheet in the second half. All in all, Woy Woy’s first-half dominance proved too much for Ourimbah on that day. A double from Lynette Soames along with single goals to Laura Mundy, Lucy Metcalfe, Abigail Muspratt and Tahlor Thackray saw the Roosters hold on to their spot at the top of the table with a 6-0 win.

Despite the loss, Dave Hurley was happy with how his team rebounded in the second half and was able to play quality football. “I can definitely see the signs of improvement, as our second half against Woy Woy on Sunday was one of our best halves so far this season.”

Wyong 1 – 9 Kanwal

A dominating performance put Kanwal back in the winner’s circle as they managed to score nine past a gritty Wyong side

Wyong entered their fixture against Kanwal with six players out with injuries and Covid as the Emu’s knew it was going to be another tough day. The scoring started with Kanwal’s Maddie Dunlop who scored in the first 10 seconds following the kick-off. Dunlop was on hand 10 minutes later to grab her second as she used her speed to her advantage to get past the opposition defender and find the back of the net to double her side’s lead. Next on the scoresheet for the Bulls was Megan Green who grab her first of the day 23 minutes into the first half. The final goal in the first half was finished by Hayley Green who sent her side into the break 4-0 up.

The Kanwal midfield dominated and dictated the play on an uneven and bumpy surface for the whole contest. Megan Green grabbed another two to her name in the second half to solidify her hattrick for the day as her teammate Hayley Green also found the back of the net another two times as she capped off her game with a hattrick also. Kanwal’s captain Hayls Ballard was also on hand to score a goal at the 70th-minute mark. Wyong’s only goal of the day came very late in the second half, with only two minutes remaining a fantastic ball by Sheridan Maxwell found the feet of Jessica Peachey who slotted home for a well-deserved goal and the final goal of the day.

“Kanwal was excellent with the ball as they dominated possession. Their fantastic ball movement was just too much for a tired Wyong side to keep up with,” stated Wyong coach Andrew Halton.

Allan Bourke credited the opposition who displayed a never say die attitude throughout the game despite conceding nine goals. “Full marks to Wyong, they were outplayed as the scoreline indicted but they never gave up and grabbed a late goal in the final seconds of the game.”

Umina 3 – 0 Killarney

Umina finally gets their season back on track after a close-to flawless performance over the Terriers sees the E-Gals get back on winning terms.

A determined Umina started the better of the two teams as they looked to grab an early goal after failing to score in their previous two games. Umina was able to take the lead from a Liesel Collins corner and found Chelsea Campbell who managed to get herself on the scoresheet for the first time this year. Umina then receives a golden opportunity to double their lead as Gemma Crowson was fouled in the box and awarded a penalty. Kate Styles stepped up for the E-Gals and successfully converted the opportunity as Umina headed into halftime 2-0 up.

Killarney knew they had to be first on the scoresheet in the second half if they wanted any hopes of staying in the game and mounting any attempt of a comeback. The Terriers did create some chances but could not convert. This would come back to haunt them as another as Umina received another corner which they ultimately scored from. This time Hannah Batten assisted Gemma Crowson who sealed the victory for her side. Killarney thought they had a consolation goal late after they were awarded a free-kick late in the game, but the Umina goalkeeper would keep her clean sheet intact after pulling off a fantastic save.

“At the moment nothing is going our way,” stated a frustrated Adam Tait post-match.
