MATCH OF THE ROUND

Wyoming 1 – 2 Avoca

Wyoming concedes late in the second half for the second straight week as Avoca takes all three points away from the desperate Tigers side in the Round 10 Match of the Round

The game this past Sunday was labelled an extremely tough, hard-fought match on a bumpy Alan Davidson pitch that was not conducive to good football. It was a very even game as the majority of possession was played between the middle third of the field. After little to zero chances in the first half from either side, Avoca broke the deadlock and went into the break with a 1-0 lead after Jake Elder scored with a scrappy goal to grab his first goal of the year.

Avoca started the second half the better of the two sides as the Sharks created multiple opportunities but failed to convert their chances to double the scoreline. Wyoming veteran Jared Mcnee was on hand to finish a well-taken goal and grab his first goal of the year as he levelled the score for Wyoming. With the game in the balance, Avoca found the winner with another scrappy goal from Josh Menzies after a bouncing ball rebounded from Menzies’ leg into the goal. Another disappointing loss for Ian McAndrew’s side who are still winless in the competition.

Post-game McAndrew commended the opposition who fought hard until the final whistle. “Credit has to be given to Avoca as they never gave up and pushed for the winner.”

Neal Hide stated that Wyoming has very talented youngsters who will get results this year. “Full credit to Wyoming, they have several bright young players who with the guidance of several of their established players will surprise a few teams this season.”

Berkeley Vale 3 – 1 Woongarrah

A Bailey Garland hattrick was enough to get his side back to winning ways as the Wombats defeated the Wildcats.

It was an even affair early on with both sides having chances, even though Woongarrah dominated field position, Berkeley would have the more clear-cut chances on goal. Once again, Berkeley Vale would struggle to convert their opportunities into goals in front of the sticks as the Bats could have put the game to bed by halftime. After a cheap turnover in Woongarrah’s own third, Bailey Garland would make the Wildcats pay as he grabbed his first for the day and sent his side 1-0 up at the break.

Berkeley Vale came out of the sheds the more determined team and it showed on the park as Mark Pratt’s side dominated. The law of averages meant that if Berkeley kept creating chances, they would convert some which eventually happened. Fouls around the 18-yard box would not make like easy for the Woongarrah defence as one of the multiple free kicks just off the edge of the box would find the back of the net as Bailey Garland doubled the lead for his side. Woongarrah would have two one-on-ones in the space of five minutes that could have changed the game, but their attack failed to make the most of it. Berkeley would go on to punish the Woongarrah side for their missed chances when Bailey Garland beat the opposition offside trap to put the game beyond reach and secure his hattrick for the day. AJ Henderson would score a late consolation goal with a great strike from outside the 18-yard box as the game finished 3-1.

Luke Rogers stated after a good first half, his side failed to bring that into the second 45, unlike the opposition. “I was happy with our first half and thought we could build off that, but Mark’s side came out wanting the points more than us and it showed with them getting the three points they deserved on the day.”

Mark Pratt thought his side dominated throughout and was happy to pick up a vital win away from home. “It was a dominant performance for the first time this year from start to finish. Woongarrah threw everything at us, but we managed to finish off the game well and deserved the three important points.”

Terrigal 7 – 1 The Entrance

Enjoying their first home game of the season at Duffy’s Oval, Terrigal dominated proceedings scoring seven goals past The Entrance.

It took only seven minutes for Terrigal to grab their first of the day when former Entrance striker Mahkye Brownlie headed home at the back post from a corner. It wasn’t long before Terrigal got their second when the impressive Ben Flakus released Daniel Bird one-on-one with the Entrance keeper as Bird coolly slotted home in the bottom corner. The Entrance worked tirelessly but couldn’t break down an organised Terrigal defence marshalled well by their captain Jai McNamara. The score remained 2-0 after the opening 45-minutes.

The second half was one-way traffic for the home side. After some more individual errors from The Entrance, Terrigal found their third when Bird turned provider and crossed in from the left to allow Jonah Walker to head home. The Entrance managed to hit back with a goal of their own after Jacob Ham got the final touch from a free-kick to take the score to 3-1. However, two goals in two minutes sealed the victory for the O’lads. First Ben Flakus scored a spectacular goal, firing into the top corner and moments later Brownlie got his second, rifling his shot into the bottom corner to take their lead to four. Substitute Erik Riquelme got in the act, scoring Terrigal’s sixth of the day and with the last kick of the day, Stuart Adam’s score to make it seven and hand the Entrance their biggest defeat of the season.

Pat Zwaanswijk was disappointed with the score and his players on that day. “The game should reflect for many players where their level is at the moment and where they need to improve. We will keep working hard and keep improving and learn from our mistakes.”

Martyn commented “Great to be back at Duffy’s Oval in front of a big crowd. We were sharp right from the off today and even though we scored seven, my back four were dominant today and set up the base to attack well moving the ball quickly out from the back. Great result and we move on to Wyoming next week where we will expect a tough game against an improving side.”

Southern & Ettalong 0 – 0 Kanwal

After ninety minutes of play, neither side could find the back of the net as Southern and Kanwal split the points at James Browne Oval.

It was a windy day along with a very bumpy pitch which didn’t lend itself to a day of attractive football and that is the way the game played out. Southern went into the game against Kanwal, not with the mindset of how many players they had unavailable through injury but the opportunity it has given young players to play at First Grade level and give them that experience. Neither team was able to dominate in the first half with few chances falling for either team. Kanwal created one good chance with Bailey Appo taking on the Southern defence only to have his shot saved by the Southern keeper and then Appo was unable to convert with the follow-up. Southern would create a good chance themselves but Kanwal keeper Kurtis Mahon would do well to block the shot. Both teams heading into the halftime break optimistic that they could walk away with the win on the day.

Kanwal would dominate field position for most of the second half but unfortunately could not take advantage of this. Although creating a number of half-chances with both Jason Cozens and Bailey Appo seeing their shots go wide on a number of occasions. Southern would also have their own half chances, especially on the counterattack, but they were wide of the mark with their finishing as well as the game ended in a 0-0 draw. Although the scoreline read nil-all at the end of the ninety minutes, it was an entertaining game that displayed plenty except goals.

Dale Eggleton commented. “Good goalkeeping from both keepers, good defending from both sides, good positive quality attacking forays by both sides and plenty to like for the football purists. Kanwal is a well-balanced side that now has the experience of Brad Porter and Adam Kwasnik as players to add to the young players with the ability to make them a real semi-final chance this season. As a coach, I was proud of our ninety-minute performance and now our focus must switch to our mid-week fixture against Wyoming.”

Ryan Walker was both pleased and disappointed in the result. “Southern is a difficult place to come and I’m happy to walk away with a draw. I think we also proved today that we can match it with the top teams this year. I’m also a bit disappointed that we didn’t take advantage of the field position we had in the second half. Congratulations to Dale and the Southern boys, I know they had a few players out today and they are a difficult team to beat no matter who plays.”

Killarney 3 – 1 Kariong

Killarney continues to keep their unbeaten start to the season alive after another hard-fought performance saw the Terriers come out victors against a well-organised Kariong side.

The game started with both teams creating limited chances, this was until a slip from a Kariong defender allowed Blake Silvers to cut in from the left-hand side and drill his shot into the bottom corner from just inside the box twelve minutes in. On the 30-minute mark, Andy Klijn latched onto a through ball from Adam Smith to lob the ball over the Kariong keeper from 25-yards out to double the Terrier’s lead. Moments before halftime, Kariong was able to hit back with a goal of their own after a free-kick into the box from Shane Littlehales saw the Killarney goalkeeper fumble the ball and Mark Johnstone was there to prod the ball home to make it 2-1 at half time.

The second half of action saw Kariong look to equalise as they pushed more bodies forward which saw Killarney look to sit back and hit Kariong on the counterattack. Kariong’s goalkeeper did a tremendous job keeping their side in the match, saving a flurry of Killarney chances. It wasn’t until the 88th minute that Killarney finally scored through substitute Darcy Wright, Wright managed to place home from a couple of yards out which would kill the game off and seal the win for Killarney.

Ryan Finch was pleased with the effort of his squad who made it tough for the league leaders all game. “I am proud of my team’s performance and the fact that we never gave up at any stage despite going two goals down against the team at the top of the league we still continued to dig in and fight for the win for the whole ninety minutes and never let Killarney feel comfortable at any point in the game.”

Chris Ackerley is thrilled to come away with the win despite missing valuable players on the team sheet last Sunday. “I was pleased to come away with the victory after having key players Adam Woodbine, Ethan Hall and Declan Drake all missing due to injuries and holidays.”
