Southern 14 – 1 Wyong

A dominant 14 goal win for Augusto Terra’s Southern & Ettalong shoots the Lionesses to the top of the WPL Ladder.

It was another tough day for the small Wyong squad, with a majority of the team already playing some minutes before kick-off. However, Andrew Halton’s girls never gave up, continuing to push until the final whistle. A very determined Southern side who were coming off an impressive win in their opening fixture started the game with a dominant intent. The conclusion of the first half saw Southern head into the break with an 8-0 lead.

The second half remained much of the same as Southern continued to press and create chance after chance against their opponents. Jade Hawes from Wyong was involved in plenty of positive play for the emu’s midfield and her teammate Sian Johnson was once again exceptional in between the sticks, pulling off a number of tremendous saves. Emily Diaz was a standout on Sunday, scoring a colossal 8 goals for her side. Letisha McCormack also found herself on the scoresheet for a second consecutive week, this time scoring two goals, taking her tally to the year to three goals. Hannah Davidson, Tatum Ansiewicz, Alana Currie, and Emma Woodger also recorded goals to their name on the day. Jessica Peachey found herself on the end of a nice through ball and slotted it past the opposition goalie to secure Wyong’s only goal for the day.

“Our squad will continue their hard work at training and now turn their focus to the rest of the season,” stated a positive Halton after the match.

Terra credited his opposition who showed a never give up attitude during the game. “We dominated most of the game and had several chances to score goals. Wyong played hard during the match to their credit but couldn’t avoid the goals.”

Woy Woy 2 – 2 East Gosford

The points were shared in a very tight contest this Sunday when East Gosford travelled to Austin Butler to take on WPL newcomers Woy Woy.

Not knowing what to expect from the new Woy Woy team, Jorge Chavez instructed his side to focus on what they wanted to achieve in their first 90 minutes of competitive football this season. From the first whistle, the Rams took control of the speed of the game and had lots of joy keeping possession and building up the play from the backline which was well organised by newcomer Grace Bryant. With the majority of possession and opportunities with the Rams, it was an opportunistic goal against the run of play from Laura Mundy who continued her excellent goal scoring form to start the season and give her side a 1-0 lead. East Gosford however would find a way back into the game after an opportunistic chance of their own found its way to Kelly Hogan who managed to score after an uncharacteristic miss kick from the Woy Woy goalkeeper.

The second half started with both teams playing some smart football. Woy Woy coach/player Lucy Metcalfe found herself in the backline to start the second half, her experience made it a lot harder for the Rams to break down as they searched for a go-ahead goal. Both teams started to tire as the match went on, it would be the inform striker Mundy who found space outside the box after a counterattack and managed to chip the Rams goalie from outside the box to give her side the lead for the second time in the game. East Gosford thought they would grab an equaliser moments after conceding when the Rams thought a strike from Kelly Hogan travelled over the line but was not called as the match official saw differently. Soon after Hogan thought she had an equaliser, she was shown a red card and her side would have to carry on with the rest of the match with 10 on the field. To East Gosford’s credit, they didn’t let that decision affect their hunger for the game and managed to continue to press the Woy Woy defence, forcing multiple corners which eventually led to Nubia Lanser scoring at the back stick to give the game a 2-2 finish.

Chavez was extremely proud of the character and belief his side showed on the day but was more impressed with the style of football the rams played. “Credit to both teams who played some really good football, I believe Woy Woy with all the experienced ex-Gosford girls, will continue to improve and play some good football this year. To my girls, I am super proud of our effort and belief in ourselves, and the style of football we played today. I can’t wait for the next challenge next week against Terrigal.
